JOIN THE LA JOLLA COMMUNITY PLANNING ASSOCIATION & INFLUENCE DEVELOPMENT DECISIONS

The La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) is the recognized planning group for all of La Jolla and provides advisory input on almost all development projects in La Jolla. To help ensure that this group properly represents the community's values and not just those of developers, join the LJCPA! It will strengthen the voice of residents, which is the only way to ensure a continued high quality of life in La Jolla.

LJCPA meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the La Jolla Recreation Center's Auditorium – 615 Prospect Street.

To join the LJCPA, you must attend three regular meetings in a calendar year and submit a written request for membership to the Secretary, who is currently Mark Lyon (see his contact information below). IMPORTANT: We have been informed by the CPA that while the February 23rd 2006 special CPA meeting will count as a "regular" meeting, the March 23rd Special meeting at Sherwood Hall will not count towards membership.

Please record the meetings you attend and list them when you request membership.

To check whether the CPA is properly recording your attendance, you may go to their new website:
www.lajollacpa.org and click on "members." There you will find an attendance list for the recent months of 2006. Please make sure that your name is included for each month you attended. If not, contact Mark Lyon (information below) to request that he register your attendance.

As a member, you will be allowed to vote in the yearly election of Trustees (six new trustees are elected each March) and any bylaws changes. Please note that under the current bylaws, if you become a member in 2006, you will not be able to vote until the 2007 regular election of trustees. The exception to this is voting for "rolling vacancies," (see below).

Even if you did not attend three regular meetings in the previous calendar year, you can still qualify to vote on "rolling vacancies" that occur at various times during the year when a trustee resigns or otherwise leaves the board. To vote on rolling vacancies, you must have attended three regular meetings in the preceding 12 months (as opposed to the previous calendar year). You must attend your third meeting before the meeting where the election of the new trustee takes place. Article IV, Section 2 of the LJCPA Bylaws states:

For the purpose of electing a trustee or trustees to fill a vacancy other than at the General meeting in March, the twelve (12) month membership criteria is deemed to end on the last day of the month preceding the election of the new trustee to fill the vacancy or vacancies…"

As soon as you have attended three meetings, write a letter or e-mail to both CPA Secretary Mark Lyon and CPA President Tim Golba. Please state that you are requesting membership and list the dates of the meetings you have attended. According to the CPA bylaws, this will entitle you to become a voting member for the purpose of electing trustees to fill vacancies during 2006. Following is their contact info:

If the CPA list does not show your attendance for any of the months you attended a meeting, please ask Mark Lyon to correct the record. If he indicates that he has misplaced sign-in sheets or does not have your name on the existing sign-in sheets, contact NoThirdStory. We have kept separate attendance records since the March 23rd Forum.
